137th KCS General Meeting Welcome Message

On behalf of the organizing committee, it is my great pleasure to welcome all distinguished colleagues and participants to the 137th General Meeting of the Korean Chemical Society (KCS), to be held at the International Convention Center in Jeju from April 15 (Wednesday) to 17 (Friday), 2026. This meeting will provide an invaluable forum for chemists from Korea and around the world to share their latest scientific advances, exchange ideas, and build new collaborations across all areas of chemistry.

This year’s meeting is particularly meaningful as the Korean Chemical Society celebrates its 80th anniversary, while the American Chemical Society marks its 150th year. These milestones highlight the remarkable progress achieved by the global chemistry community and underscore the importance of continued international collaboration in advancing chemical science.

The scientific program will feature a diverse range of academic presentations as well as the KCS General Assembly. We are especially honored to host Professor Tobin J. Marks (Northwestern University) and Professor Phil Ho Lee (Kangwon National University) as plenary speakers, delivering lectures entitled “Toward a Circular Plastics Economy. Mechanism-Based Catalyst Design and Evolution for Waste Polymer Recycling” and “A Journey in Chemistry: Reflections on 36 Years of Research, Education, and Discovery” respectively. In addition, Professor Kang Min Ok (Sogang University), recipient of the Man Jung Han Academic Award, will deliver an award lecture on “Engineering Noncentrosymmetric Materials through Systematic Solid-State Reaction Design: From Symmetry Control to Birefringent Crystals”. Professor Hee-Seung Lee (KAIST), recipient of the 2026 KCS Academic Excellence Award, will also present an award lecture entitled “Chiral Molecular Architectures from Helical Foldamers”.

This year’s program also presents several distinguished thematic symposia, including:
  • ACS 150th JACS Symposium: Transformative Chemistry for a Sustainable and Smart Future
  • IBS-GIST Symposium: Light-Matter Interactions in Chemistry
  • InnoCORE AI-CRED Symposium: AI-Driven Convergence in Drug Discovery: Design, Delivery, and Digital
  • BKCS Symposium: Large-Scale Research Initiatives: The Engine of Chemical Excellence
  • JKCS Symposium: JKCS Research Trends of Young Researchers
  • Industry-Academia Symposium: Mass Spectrometry and the Analytical Instrument Industry
In addition to the scientific sessions, we have organized a variety of engaging academic and networking events, including two days of poster presentations and exhibitions by leading companies in the chemistry industry.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to our sponsors, including DONGWOO FINE-CHEM, Bioneer, LigaChem Biosciences, and TCI-SEJIN CI, for their generous support. Above all, I extend my heartfelt thanks to all members of the Korean Chemical Society and meeting participants for your continued dedication and contributions to the advancement of chemistry.

I look forward to welcoming you to Jeju, and I hope this meeting will be both stimulating and memorable for all participants.

Gyochang Keum
President of the Korean Chemical Society
